Contactless Fare

The ‘Tap to Ride’ contactless fare payment option allows riders to tap a contactless debit/credit Visa or Mastercard or mobile wallet (phone, watch, wearable) to pay their fare when boarding any Clean Air Express bus (watch video). Fares for 10-rides or 30 days are the same as using a physical pass. you won’t be charged more than $10.80 per day no matter how many times you ride Clean Air Express in a 24-hour period—as long as you pay with the same contactless card or mobile wallet throughout the day. The same concept is true for monthly fare caps: Instead of paying for a $160 monthly (30-day) pass upfront, you will be able to tap to pay as you go until you hit the $160 monthly maximum fare cap. You will never be charged more than $160 in a 30-day period—as long as you use the same contactless payment method to tap on for each trip. In the event the card reader is malfunctioning or removed for maintenance, a fare (cash or ticket) is still required.  

Fast Facts

  • The Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) has introduced contactless fare payment technology on the Clean Air Express commuter bus service.
  • Visa and Mastercard contactless-enabled bank cards and mobile wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and Fitbit Pay) are accepted. Cash and standard Clean Air Express monthly and 10-Ride passes continue to be accepted.
  • To tap to ride using the same method of contactless payment on each trip: Tap the payment reader as you board the bus; a green “Payment Approved” screen will appear with valid payment types.
  • If traveling in a group, each rider must pay their fare separately. Don’t use the same contactless payment for multiple riders.
  • Contactless payments are safe and secure.

How do I know if I have a contactless-enabled bank card?

Cards that are contactless-enabled have the following symbol (on the front or the back) of them:

Many banks and financial institutions have switched to contactless cards to make payments safer, faster, and more secure for their customers. Check with your card issuer if you are unsure if your card is contactless-enabled.

When you are ready to ride, just board a Clean Air Express bus and tap your contactless-enabled card or smart device onto the payment reader, which looks like this.

During the six-month demonstration, the Clean Air Express plans to accept any Visa or Mastercard that has the contactless symbol on it or any Visa or Mastercard placed into a mobile wallet on your smart devicefor tapping to pay the fare as you board the Clean Air Express.

The mobile wallets that Clean Air Express plans to accept are Apple PayGoogle Pay, Samsung Pay, and Fitbit Pay.

What can I do if I do not have a contactless bank card?
  • Check with your bank to see if they can send you a contactless-enabled card. There is a phone number on the back of your bank card that you may use to find out if your current product has a contactless option.
  • Try adding your Visa or MAstercard credit or debit card to a mobile wallet on your smart device, and then tap that device to pay your fare. Just open the mobile wallet on your smartphone—such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay—and follow the instructions to enable payment.
  • Request a contactless card from one of the companies that offer free contactless prepaid debit cards including Cash Card and Venmo Card.
  • Continue to pay in cash when you board the Clean Air Express.
  • Buy a 10-Ride or Monthly Pass from one of our sales outlets.
What are the fares?

Fares: How fares are calculated when paying with a contactless payment method

  • One-way fare: $6. Whether you tap to pay with a contactless card or a smart device, you will be charged $6 for a one-way fare when you tap the payment reader as you board (this is a $1 savings compared to the cash fare).
  • Daily (24-hour) maximum: $10.80. See below to learn more about fare capping.
  • Monthly (30-day) maximum: $160. See below to learn more about fare capping.

Fare capping guarantees that you won’t be charged more than $10.80 per day no matter how many times you ride Clean Air Express in a 24-hour period—as long as you pay with the same contactless card or mobile wallet throughout the day.

To take advantage of fare capping, you must always use the same payment method to tap on for your trip. For example: Don’t use your phone on your morning trip and then tap your watch or card in the evening. Even though the same bank card may be linked via both devices, the payment reader will see them as two different payment methods and you will lose the benefit of fare capping.

The same concept is true for monthly fare caps: Instead of paying for a $160 monthly (30-day) pass upfront, you will be able to tap to pay as you go until you hit the $160 monthly maximum fare cap. You will never be charged more than $160 in a 30-day period—as long as you use the same contactless payment method to tap on for each trip.

What if the card reader is malfunctioning or missing?

In some cases the card reader may be removed for maintenance or is malfunctioning.  If so, passengers must be prepared to pay their fare using alternative media, such as cash or ticket.

How can I see what transactions have been made on my card?

All customers can access a card or device’s transaction at cleanairexpress.littlepay.com. Input your card details and a full list of transactions can be viewed or printed.

Can I still pay with cash or a physical pass?

Yes, throughout the demonstration, Clean Air Express will continue to accept cash fare payments and both Monthly and 10-Ride Express passes.
